When you think about the language your are using to design your website, what do you think of first? What is important about web design language, what is imperative, and what part of web design efforts can you take or leave? You have the final word.
If you’d like to create and publish your own web site on the Internet, your first step should be to decide what type of web site you would like to create and what web design language you would like to use.

Although there are several web design languages to choose from, make sure you take some time to research your options to ensure you’re making the best choice for your project.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

The easiest and most popular web design language is Hypertext Markup Language, better known as HTML. This language is so simple you can type the syntax into a text editor, such as Notepad, save it with an .html extension and instantly have a web page.

You can learn more about HTML here:

http://www.w3schools.com/html/

Although HTML will enable you to create simple web sites, if you want something more dynamic, you’ll need to look into using other languages:

PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP)

PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, better known as PHP, is a highly popular, server-side scripting language that can be embedded directly into HTML coding. PHP can do anything that CGI (Common Gateway Interface) can do, such as process form data and auto generate dynamic content. However, PHP can do much more. It can be used on all major operating systems and supports most web servers.
PHP’s main focus is development for the web, so it has a quick development time and can solve scenarios much quicker than some of the other web design languages.

You can learn more about PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor here:

http://www.php.net/

ColdFusion

ColdFusion, developed by Macromedia, is used to build and serve web pages. It consists of ColdFusion Studio, which is used to create web pages, and ColdFusion Server, which is used to display the web pages.

One of the best features of ColdFusion is the ability to create web pages ‘on the fly’ from content stored within a database.
For example, a variety of content can be placed within a database as ‘pieces of content.’ When a user types in the web address to retrieve the web page, ColdFusion dynamically develops the pages, from the ‘pieces of content,’ as they are served.

Although it is very reliable, ColdFusion may be better suited for larger companies rather than individuals, as it is fairly expensive.

You can learn more about ColdFusion here:

http://macromedia.com/support/coldfusion/tutorial_index.html

Java Server Pages (JSP)

Java Server Pages, also known as JSP, is a web design language developed by Sun Microsystems. It is used to control web page content via servlets, which are little programs that run on a web server. These servlets modify the web page on the server prior to it being displayed within a web browser.

The JSP technology enables you to combine regular, static HTML with dynamically generated HTML.

You can learn more about Java Server Pages here:

http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/docs.html

Active Server Pages (ASP)

Active Server Pages, also known as ASP, is Microsoft’s solution to dynamic, interactive web pages. Active Server Pages are web pages that contain scripts in addition to the standard HTML tags. These scripts are processed prior to a web page being displayed within a web browser.

Unlike standard HTML pages that have an .html or .htm extension, Active Server Pages have an .asp extension.
An advantage of ASP is that it is language-independent and therefore is easy to use across all platforms and applications. It is very flexible and powerful, yet some people don’t like it merely because it is a Microsoft product.

You can learn more about Active Server Pages here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnasp/html/asptutorial.asp

Conclusion

With so many different web design languages to choose from, which is the best language for your project? That will depend on your web site needs and how much time and/or money you’re willing to invest.

If you want a simple web site with text and images, HTML is definitely the way to go. Not only is it easy to learn, but there are also many HTML editors available online that will write the code for you.

Although HTML is usually the right choice for most, if you’d like your web site to be dynamic, you will need to research some of the other languages until you find the best solution for your project. Take your time and do your homework before you begin. If you don’t feel confident in your ability to create your own web site, hire a professional. It will save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run.

FYI: It’s possible that the day will come when you can use something you read about here about Internet languages to have a beneficial impact in the way you approach web design as a beginner. At that point you will the happy you learned more from this report about web design language.

Flash CS3 is out and Actionscript 3.0 is on its way to your screen, well it’s not a really a big surprise, Flash 9 and Flex have been available in their alpha and beta version for a while before their official releases and many flash developers had the opportunity to get their hands dirty with Actionscript 3.0.

I must confess that I have never been a big fan of Flex, the main reason being that I consider that it’s been developed only to attract more developers to the flash community. Also, like a lot of Flash developers, I could not find one good reason to learn Flex therefore I waited for the release of Flash CS3 to give it a go and see what Actionscript 3.0 was all about.

Recruitment agencies seems to put Flash developers and Flex developers in the same package, the reality is very different and from my experience Flash developers are not comfortable using Flex and Flex developers are not at home with Flash.

I have been surfing the Flash wave since Flash 4 and I have been waiting for every new version of Flash with excitement. Flash 5, especially, was a big improvement. For those of use who tried to program their fist game or application in Flash 4 the new version of Actionscript was very exciting, we could do a lot more without loosing too much hair. With each new version of Flash it’s been very clear than the development team was trying to enrich the actionscript syntax and to bring it in line with the ECMA Script standard (JavaScript, JSscript).

With the release of Flash MX 2004 Actionscript 2.0 was born and it was the first big improvement for Flash developers coming from a development background. I remember the “woohoo” and “wow” of one of my colleague at work who was coming from a C++ and strict OOP background, he was obviously getting very excited that Flash was making a move in his direction. For designers who struggled long enough to grasp the concepts of Actionscript 1.0 this wasn’t so much of a good reason to jump up and down. For me, well since Flash is my main tool and “bread provider” I have always tried to stay up to date with the latest developments coming with each new version and the time has come to see what’s in stock for us in the Actionscript 3.0 box.

A new version of Actionscript?

Actionscript 3.0 is a not strictly a totally new version of Actionscript, you can still write “frame based” code and the dot syntax you are familiar with is still there.

Actionscript 3.0 is now a powerful, object-oriented programming language. AS3.0 revolves around objects, classes, properties and methods. Actionscript 3.0 is more strictly Object Oriented than the previous versions of Actionscript, in some cases you are going to have to write more code to achieve results that would have required less code in AS2.0. So you might be wondering why would you bother writing more code to achieve the same result? Well the first important thing is that AS3.0 is supposed to be 10 time faster than AS2.0. Many exciting classes and methods have been added to AS3.0, amongst many of them I am going to mention the frame Rate method of the Stage class that let you set the frame rate of your movie dynamically, a long time dream for many Flash developer If you ever wanted to be able to create your own sound spectrum Win amp style well it is out there with the compute Spectrum method. Also a lot of older methods like getURL, loadMovie, onClipEvent, have been replaced with newer methods, some other methods and properties like removeMovieClip, _global, attachMovie have just been removed.

3 good reasons to learn Actionscript 3.0

It is never easy to change our long time habits. It is somehow painful to have to destroy what we’ve been patiently building but if we can realize that it is for the best things are not that difficult. So let me show you why you should start learning Actionscript 3.0

1. I guess that if you are a professional Flash developer you don’t want to be left behind, also you might have to start on the AS3.0 project of another developer and you don’t want to have to run away screaming because you haven’t done your homework.

2. Actionscript 3.0 has been optimized for speed with the introduction of the Sprite class and the Display list. Speed is important as soon as your application starts growing, also if you are a Flash game developer Actionscript 3.0 will give you the opportunity to develop even faster games.

3. Actionscript 3.0 introduces many new beneficial improvements:

* New event handling system, there is now a single event handling system instead of the many different event-handling mechanisms that existed in previous versions of the actionscript.

* ActionScript 3.0 includes a group of classes based on the ECMAScript for XML (E4X) specification. These classes include powerful and easy-to-use functionality for working with XML data. Working with XML is a lot easier now in Actionscript 3.0 than it was in Actionscript 2.0.

* ActionScript 3.0 includes native support for regular expressions so that you can quickly search for and manipulate strings. ActionScript 3.0 implements support for regular expressions.

* A new system called the “Display list” has been introduced to handle the visual elements on the stage. Depth management is now automatic and built into Flash Player, rendering assignment of depth numbers unnecessary.

Since AS3.0 is out for Flash CS3 and has been out for a while with Flex a lot of people are considering that it is very trendy to say that they are programming in AS 3.0, the reality in that in the concrete world not everything is so straightforward in AS 3.0, compared to AS2.0. It can take a lot longer to create some basic interactivities in AS3.0 and if you are mainly a Flash designer adding basic code to your projects, you won’t see many benefits in using AS3.0. Actionscript 3.0 brings many more features that I am not mentioning here but that will I will approach in the tutorials to come, make sure to come and check them out.

Having been involved in the internet industry for a large part of my working life, I have spent a lot of time researching and browsing the internet and reading websites, mainly for client design research, but also for occasional personal use.

The one thing that I find most disappointing, is the apparent lack of thought going into website creation and it’s purpose, which in turn creates a missed opportunity for many e-businesses to become successful.

My personal perspective on e-businesses and their websites is that if they don’t take pride in their websites and show to their customers a passion for what they do, chances are, they won’t take pride in their products, and the passion for providing good customer service will also be missing.

What you must remember, is that your web site is a direct reflection of you and your business. The appearance of your site is the most important factor in determining your potential success rate. In short, if your site doesn’t look professional or pleasing to the eyes at first glance, the majority of people will assume your products and/or services to be of similar poor standard.

At the other end of the scale, you could fall into the trap of going overboard with the design and over complicate things with incorporating high costing flashy graphics. You may end up with a great looking and highly aesthetic web site, but the danger with this is that your site may prove unreliable and at times may take too long to load. There is nothing worse for a customer than trying to visit a slow loading site, and most will close the browser window in complete frustration. As i’m sure you will be able to work out, this will ultimately cost you business.

The other major consideration (if not the most important) when designing a website is your content. Not just links, but content with passion, relativity, and understanding to the customer. When someone is searching for something in particular and they visit your web site, they’re visiting for a reason. Your site has something they want, Whether this be your product, service, and/or information. If they are unable to obtain what they’re looking for, they move on to the next site and so on. To be able to get your visitors to stay and look around your website, you must give them a reason to. Providing them with quality content will achieve this goal.

There have been countless other lists and articles on the subject of website designing mistakes, but I have compiled my own list, from a designer’s perspective, of some pitfalls to look out for when considering either designing a website or purchasing a template. They are:

Poor/slow load time

Not very pleasing to the eye

Poor spelling/Grammar

No contact information – particularly an address

Poorly designed navigation

Text too bunched together/hard to read

Broken links

Poor cross-browser compatibility

Over-sized, slow loading graphics

Too many graphics

Horizontal scrollbars

Long, long, long pages/too much information on one page

Overuse of flash graphics

Poor choice of colour scheme

The use of frames

Too many pop up windows

Poor content organization

Advertising banners

Too many different colours

Under construction signs

Remember that the simple, clear, informative and well designed sites are the most successful. If you are a current e-business and your sales aren’t what you had hoped, consider the above and take some time to look openly and honestly at your site. Spending money on improving your website is a much better investment than throwing money away on trying to advertise and market a site that just isn’t good enough to sell your product or services.

If you are looking for a template or a custom designed website, be aware of the above and be prepared to ask your chosen designer or template provider questions to ensure that your hard earned money doesn’t go to waste on an inferior design, which contains any of the above. Asking questions won’t cost you a penny, and in doing so could actually save you a lot of money over the long term.

Getting your website right first time is vital in terms of saving money and time. The earlier your website is up and running properly, the quicker you will be able to reap the rewards of a successful e-business.

At last we got together with our designing team and SEO gurus in the meeting room, trying to figure out why they were so unfriendly. What was the reason that our designers and the quite SEO guys were not getting along. A few minutes in the meeting and they were again arguing…..

Head Designer: Our clients want high end designs and that is why we use lots of flash and images….

SEO Head: they want SEO friendly websites and with all your graphics we have a hard time optimizing the sites….even our own company has the site in Flash…we can’t even do anything to make it SEO friendly…

Head Designer: But we are already so popular with our clients why do we need SEO….

SEO Head:We need to become the No.1 Web Design Company in the world, any one looking for web designing services should know us…that is why we need SEO…..moreover our clients need to see that we are proficient at SEO and what better way to show them than the work done on our own website……

…..and so on they went.

Our CEO silenced the teams….asked them to have some water….gave a dramatic pause…cleared his throat:

Mr. CEO: Ok people…what we need to do is start with the xHTML version of Felix Labs…… (grunts from the head designer…). It has been a long time since we had a HTML version. The xHTML version will run parallel with the Flash version and you guys (the SEO team) will have a very good opportunity to prove your side…You have 2 months to complete the website. Enough said!!!!??

Enough said….yes sir!

With this statement our CEO looked at everyone with a judging glimpse in the eye and walked out of the meeting room gracefully.

So that’s how we came up with the idea of coming up with the HTML version of the site. Not that it was not planned before but our wonderful clients would have kept us busy for the next 5 years at least to which we are the utmost grateful and the idea would have stayed for a long time in the pipeline. So here we are starting the xHTML version. At least the designers and the SEO geeks seem to be working together laying out a plan to create the ideal xHTML and SEO friendly website……wonder how long they would be peaceful…

We will be linking up the beta version once the design finalizes and the work starts and will keep you posted on the progress. We will be open to your comments and feedback’s and your opinion will be of great value to us…do let us know what you would like to see on our website so that it is more user friendly and client oriented…

Wait!!! There seems to be a commotion in the hall….the designers and our SEO boys are shouting….well that (the peace) didn’t seem to last long…and we will not be having a peaceful time at least for the coming few months until unless the xHTML version of Felix Labs is completed and put on live…

Will keep you posted on how we are doing here……

Title and Description meta tags are one of the most important places to put your keywords in.

Many search engines like Yahoo gives more ranking to websites that have the keywords listed in the meta title and description.

Title is more important than description because many search engines will display the title exactly as it appears on your page.

Longer titles are more effective

Since title is usually a hyperlink, it will have a different color and it will be bold then it will be easier to read than site description.

People usually scan the titles but don’t read all the information in it.

Logic dictates that longer sentence will give you more opportunity to include more words that one of them will attract the reader attention.

People don’t read text, they recognize it

People don’t read individual letters after the time they turn 12 years old, but they recognize the words from the shape defined by the tops of the letters.

If you don’t believe me, try to cover the bottom half of any sentence in a book or newspaper, you can still read the words, try to cover the upper half of a different sentence, it is very hard to read.

Now how can we benefit of this?

Since people recognize words by the top of the letters then sentences that start with one capital letter and then lowercase letters are easier to recognize and get read faster.

Words in all uppercase are hard to read and people don’t like them.

Many years ago Yahoo was the most popular search engine on the web but after but now it seems that Google is the preferred search engine.

But Yahoo is still a major player in the market and it is estimated that Yahoo queries make up 25 % – 28 % of search engines traffic.

Yahoo is more active than Google because there are more pages in yahoo index than Google.

VS

Another difference between Yahoo and Google is that Yahoo is a directory in the first place then it is a search engine, so a website which has the keyword in the category it is listed under, will take more chance in the beginning of the search results.

Google pays more attention to the OFF Page factors like back links, listing in web directories, listing in DMOZ while Yahoo concentrates more on the ON Page factors like Keyword density, keyword proximity, meta title, meta description, keywords in URL and the internal linking structure.

Keyword density is how frequently your keyword appear in the paragraph or in the whole page, for Yahoo the more the better but to avoid being banned by Google keep the keyword density at 7%.

Keyword proximity refers to how close your keywords are to the starting of the phrase.

Meta title and meta description are very important when optimizing a website for yahoo, always try to include your keywords in the meta title and avoid using a long title for your page, and the meta description must be related to your title and keywords.

Keywords in URL play a great role in Yahoo optimization, but note that if your keyword is ‘car’ for example then ‘goodcar’ will be good but ‘car’ only will better.

Number of visitors: for example if your website in at position 5 and your are getting more visitors than a website in the 4th position then your website will take its place at 4th position.

My last advice for you is to have a good unique content in your website, this is the only reason that makes someone adds your website to his favorites and visit it again.

As the internet became a huge resource for the advertising business, started a trend of bulk e-mails. The word SPAM has indeed become a household name but not as it was associated to what it represented 70 years ago when the famous brand was introduced. A can of SPAM could be found in every American household in the 60’s, such was the popularity of the brand. Then came a new product……you can’t eat it, you can’t taste it…it does not even come in a can…but the product can be found in every household in the world that has a computer…it is even more individual as it can be found on anyone who has an e-mail address. Yes the new products was unsolicited bulk e-mail or UBE or now as you know it SPAM. When we talk of spam the first thing that comes to our mind is all those e-mails that we need to clean up every time we open our e-mail. Tired of cleaning up you get yourselves a new e-mail address and voila you have SPAM. But spam is not just bulk e-mail, spam can be of different types. The term can be applied to other media as well like: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam and junk fax transmissions. Let me give a brief introduction to the above terms. Some of you might already be nodding their heads and saying we already know what all that spammy stuff means.

But let’s not be selfish, there are still some whom it might help:

Instant Messaging Spam: As the name suggests makes use of you instant messengers or IM’s. This kind is also referred to as SPIM a combination of the two words SPAM and IM. There you are sitting with one of your friends or close ones and whoops comes up a window with all those lucrative offers…of what you don’t have or might want to improve on. I do sometimes find this very amusing (please do not get me wrong). It is really amazing to watch different people react to such kind of windows….one blushes, the other looks at it with guilt and tries in vain to close the window but his anxiety won’t let him click on the X…..but the most common reaction is the grunt. I personally try to report the message as spam if I am in the mood…if not the usual reaction is “grunt….click on the red “X”….” . The sad part of this is that almost all the popular IM’s like Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and even Windows Live messenger have fallen prey to the hands of SPAM. Many IM systems offer a user directory, including demographic information that allows an advertiser to gather the information, sign on to the system, and send unsolicited messages. To send instant messages to millions of users requires scriptable software and the recipients’ IM usernames. Spammers have similarly targeted Internet Relay Chat channels, using IRC bots that join channels and bombard them with advertising.

Usenet Newsgroup Spam: The Usenet newsgroup was spammed even before e-mail spamming. Usenet defines spamming as excessive multiple posting, that is, the repeated posting of a message (or substantially similar messages). The word “spam” was usually taken to mean excessive multiple posting (EMP). During the early 90’s there was substantial controversy among Usenet system admins over the use of cancel messages to control spam. A cancel message is a directive to news servers to delete a posting, causing it to be inaccessible to those who might read it. The prevalence of Usenet spam led to the development of the Breidbart Index as an objective measure of a message’s “spamminess”. The use of the BI and spam-detection software has led to Usenet being policed by anti-spam volunteers, who purge newsgroups of spam by sending cancels and filtering it out on the way into servers. This very active form of policing has meant that Usenet is a far less attractive target to spammers than it used to be, and most of the industrial-scale spammers have now moved into e-mail spam instead. Hence Usenet became less prone to spam as it had people controlling the inflow of spam.

Mobile Phone Spam: It’s 3 am in the morning and my mobile goes trinnnnnn….I know it’s a text message and it might be possible that someone might need my help (like a friend stranded in the middle of nowhere) and out of modesty just messaging me to find out if am asleep or not…..I concentrate all my energy and will into one trying to get up and look for the mobile. With a beating heart I unlock my phone and open the message….touché…..how many calls can I make if I were to send a SMS or buy a special pack or that I am lucky to have won some six figure amount and that I need to call a number which will cost me some 0.00$ only to claim my reward…. I was in the middle of my 5th dream when this happened and frustration is just an easy way to express what I feel at that moment. A couple of years ago I had read an article regarding a survey conducted in England on how many people will leave everything just answer their mobile phone or check the SMS that they received…the survey gave a whopping 80% men who would even stop while having sex to answer their phones and 72% women who would also stop doing anything, look at who’s calling and think to answer or not to answer the call. “SpaSMS” is also how appropriately this kind of spam was termed.

This gets even more adverse to customers not only for the inconvenience but also because of the fee they may be charged per text message received in some markets.

Online game messaging spam: Many online games allow players to contact each other via player-to-player messaging, chat rooms, or public discussion areas. What qualifies as spam varies from game to game, but usually this term applies to all forms of message flooding, violating the terms of service contract for the website.

Spam targeting search engines (spamdexing): As the name suggests it is a combination of the words Spam and Indexing. This refers to the practice on the World Wide Web of modifying HTML pages to increase the chances of them being placed high on search engine relevancy lists. These sites use “black hat search engine optimization techniques” to unfairly increase their rank in search engines. Many modern search engines modified their search algorithms to try to exclude web pages utilizing spamdexing tactics. That’s all for now as all this spam is spamming my mind. Will be writing on this topic in the future as soon my spammed mind is unspammed, filtered and cleaned out. I would like to share that the inspiration for this article came from an article read on Yahoo! related to what happens when you buy something from a SPAM link. To share a little of that story the story began with the author who tried make a purchase from a spam link. He traced the transactions to almost have gone through 4 different countries on different continents. The amazing part was that the items a pair of earrings ($52 and $26 for shipping) were shipped to him but got lost in the local post office not far from his home place. The author also tried to investigate the pattern on how the websites worked and how they are recycled after a few months to sell different products. The fact is that in the name of advertising we have been spamvertised, with the bulk e-mails and the numerous pop-ups that we come across everyday in our web life. So folks happy reading………will love to have your comments….NO SPAM please
